Editorial Services Overview

Novel Approach Edits is a full-service editorial company. I can help you with everything from preliminary manuscript critiques and editorial letters to in-depth developmental editing to final copyediting and proofreading. Wherever your novel is now, I can help you get it to where you want it to be.

FREE FIVE PAGE SAMPLE EDIT

So you can get a sense of my editing style, I will perform a free sample of the first five pages of your manuscript. You will then receive the sample and the quote for the services at the same time. Let me know if you have any questions!

Manuscript Critique

You'll receive a detailed editorial letter (4-10 pages)

With a manuscript critique, I will analyze your characters, your plot, your organization, your flow and pace, your setting, possible holes, and more. This is editing with a large-scale, "big picture" perspective. If your manuscript hasn't been professionally edited at all yet, this is a good place to start.

Line Editing

You'll receive an detailed in-text comments in your manuscript and a basic manuscript critique (2-3 pages)

This stage of edit will include a thorough, line-by-line reading of the  manuscript to detect problem areas and where/how things can be improved. Word choice, concision, emotion, fluidity, clarity, and more will be dissected. As well as these line-by-line notes, the Editor will include a basic manuscript critique with thoughts on overarching pacing, characterization, plot, etc.

Two-Step Developmental Editing (Critique + Line)

You'll receive an editorial letter, and then post-revisions, detailed in-text comments.

This service is two-fold, first with a manuscript critique (see description above), and then following your revisions, I'll read carefully through your manuscript, line by line, trying to detect where the problems are and where things/prose can be improved. Word choice, concision, emotion, fluidity, and more will be dissected.

Copyediting

You'll receive a style sheet and your document with Tracked Changes and in-text comments/queries.

Copyediting is where we get into the grammar, spelling, and punctuation of your manuscript. I use and follow the Chicago Manual of Style and Merriam-Webster's 11th edition. I will ensure consistency throughout your manuscript—like the spelling of place and character names, for instance—through the creation and use of a style sheet.

Proofreading

You'll receive your document with Tracked Changes and in-text comments/queries.

Proofreading should happen after your manuscript has already been both developmentally edited and copyedited, whether by me or someone else. It is a read-through of your manuscript to catch any typos or missed grammatical errors before publication. I won't be editing anything for content at this point.

Submissions Package

You'll receive in-text comments/notes and edits for your query submission package.

In a query, you have a very short amount of time to catch that agent's or editor's eye. That's where I can help. The standard submission package for agents and publishers is a query letter, a synopsis, and the first three chapters of your novel. If you have other specifications, let me know and we can discuss it.
